Director's Message
Dear KIS Families,
I hope that everyone is safe and well. It is an odd feeling to think about starting the school year in the middle of a needless war. We really had hoped that things would be different by now, but as we mentioned in our end of year meeting with parents, we had thought the likeliest scenario would be that we start this school year online.
I would like to welcome those who are new to our school. We look forward to having you be a part of our school community. Even though my time at KIS has been through some turbulent times, I truly do love this school and how amazing it has been. I hope you will find the same sentiment while you are with us.
So, what does this school year look like?
STARTING THE SCHOOL YEAR ONLINE
KIS will be starting our school year online. We ask that all students joining the program are prepared with the ability to join online classes.
FIRST DAYS AND OPEN HOUSE - FOR FAMILIES AND STUDENTS
- THURSDAY, AUGUST 25TH - OPEN HOUSE (9:00-12:30)
- FRIDAY, AUGUST 26TH - First Full Day of School (9:00-3:30)
A DIFFERENT KIND OF YEAR
It probably goes without saying, but this year will be another unique year for KIS. Our leadership team and team of exceptional teachers will be working to provide a different type of experience for students. We continue to have our eyes and hopes on a return to Kyiv, but also must prepare for the reality of this timeline. Therefore, we would like to make sure our online program is the best it can be. We would like students to be engaged with the school throughout the day while still having breaks from screen time.
WILL KIS OPERATE FACE-TO-FACE IN KYIV?
We will be beginning the year online. We do hope to put together face-to-face options for students and teachers who are in Kyiv, but this will depend on many different circumstances. We would prefer to shift things in this direction with the appropriate time and opportunity, as it presents itself. When I have been asked concerning "when", the best answer I can give and stick to is that we are doing this, until we are doing something different.
KIS TEACHING AND LEADERSHIP TEAM
You will see below a list of our teaching staff for this school year and the different roles in place. Many students and parents already know these teachers, but you will also have time to meet them during our OPEN HOUSE.
ONLINE SCHEDULE AND PROGRAM
We are making some changes to the schedule to reflect an experience that we want students to have. Much of this experience will be based on a general community theme throughout the year that will be incorporated into different times and opportunities throughout the year.
KIS COMMUNITY
This year, we will have a much smaller school community and with that comes some opportunity that has not existed as much in the past with a larger school. We want to use the opportunity to support each other and build upon the already rich history, strength, and pride that has been KIS over the years. We hope that all parents, students, and teachers will be able to connect with each other in meaningful ways this year.
I am looking forward to another year with KIS, even within some obvious challenges.
Sincerely,
Luke Woodruff
