| Director's Message

Dear Parents,

It was truly wonderful to see returning families for the first day of school yesterday as well as to welcome onboard our new families. The school was buzzing with activities as students got reacquainted with 'old' friends and began to make new ones. I was so impressed by the politeness, kindness and caring shown by many members of our community throughout the day.

In the next few weeks teachers will be getting to know your children and building on their learning and achievements from the last school year. Please note that you will have opportunities to meet teachers at Parent Teacher Conferences, scheduled for Friday 10th October. There will be a booking system that will be opened to you so you can sign up for appointments closer to the day. Meetings will take place throughout the day and in order to facilitate this, there will be no classes for students on 10th October.

You are welcome to contact teachers to make appointments on other days whenever the need arises. I request that parents do not go to classrooms unannounced and that you make a prior arrangement if you do want to speak with teachers, or contact Reception if it is something urgent.

From time to time parents may wish to arrange birthday or other celebrations, sometimes at school and sometimes at an outside venue. For in-school celebrations please contact class teachers to make arrangements and the teacher will advise what is best for the class - with details such as which day and what time of day. If you are arranging something outside of school and invitations will be given, I request that all children in a class are invited. It can be upsetting for children if they feel they have been 'left out'.

I am going to repeat the following messages from last week as they provide important information and I want to ensure that you have noted these details.

I will be meeting with the Parent Teacher Organisation (PTO) next week to discuss events for this year and we'll be able to pass along some information about this in the near future.

Campus Hours: 8:10 am-4:15 pm

Our campus opens each morning at 8:10 am. Elementary students will go to the playground until their teacher meets them outside and will take them to class. Middle School and High School students will wait in the lobby until 8:27 am when they are dismissed to their classes.

If your child arrives before 8:10 am they will be asked to wait with our security staff until campus fully opens. If a siren is going in the morning and your child arrives before 8:10 am they will be let into our safety shelter as soon as they arrive to school. Teachers will be in the safety shelter to help supervise.  We will ask you to pick up your children each day at 4:00 pm and campus will close at 4:15 pm.

Morning Elementary Recess

Last year Elementary students spent their morning snack break inside the classroom. This year, Elementary students will have their morning snack break outside so please have them dress appropriately for the weather each day.

Cell Phone Policy:

Elementary and Middle School: Devices should be placed in backpacks all day unless a teacher gives permission to use them for an assignment or class activity.

High School: Devices are allowed to be used before school, during break/lunch, and after school.  Devices should stay in backpacks during class time and at all other times unless a teacher gives permission.

If students find it difficult to follow this policy, they will be asked to turn in their device to reception for safe keeping and you will be contacted by administration.

How to Contact Your Child During the School Day:

If you need to talk to your child during the school day, please contact reception and a message will be delivered to them. Please do not call or text your child directly during the school day.

Contacting School Staff:

Staff hours are 8:10am-4:15pm Monday-Friday. If you email a teacher outside of these times you may not receive a response until the following day. We endeavour to respond within 24 hours.

If you would like to make an appointment with anyone from the Admin team please call reception, who will make the necessary arrangements.

After School and Events

We are excited to offer after school activities and events again this year. Please look out for school communication for more information to follow.

Looking forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday 26th August after the long weekend,

Kind regards,

Susan Tilney

| Languages Other Than English (LOE)

KIS Languages Other than English department is offering 4 languages to students from 7-year-old to Secondary 4, if they don't need Intensive English (Elementary / Middle School) or Safety netting (High School).

We teach Ukrainian Native and French, German, Spanish Non-native programs. The Native courses meet the main requirements in Literature and Language for national schools. The Non-native curriculum is aligned to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages, starting with A1 (Introductory level) and going up to C1 (Proficiency).

We take in consideration your preferences when making schedules and form LOE groups accordingly.  This year, we have the following options:

  • 7 y.o. kids will learn Ukrainian at Period 4.
  • 8, 9, 10 y.o. will choose Ukrainian or French (Period 6).

Middle schoolers may take French (all levels), German (Intermediate and Advanced) or Spanish (Intermediate only). They have LOE classes at Period 8.

In High School, there are more choices: French (all levels), German (all levels), Spanish (Introductory and Intermediate) and Ukrainian (Native). Some Secondary students take 2 LOE classes.

Almost all the groups have been completed, and the next week the placement will be finished. If you want to make some changes, please, contact LOE Coordinator (sergey-berezhny@kyiv.qsi.org).

Welcome to LOE!

Sincerely,

Sergey Berezhniy
