Kozak Korner #04. September 09th, 2023

| Director's Message

Dear Kozak Community,

The fresh mornings are a wonderful start to the day. It is great to see our Kozaks coming to school on time and ready to learn.

Elementary

This week we started our Learn Through Play program. Twice a week, students attend their chosen activities. On the other days, teachers have arranged a variety of activities and opportunities that allow students to learn new things through exploration and play. Teachers have a calendar of Learn Through Play activities which they will share with you.

Middle School and Secondary

After-school sports and activities (YAWS, water-polo, football) all started this week. Students may still sign up for these activities!

MAP Testing

The fall session for testing Measure of Academic Progress will be from September 25th- October 11th. Students from 6-year-old to Secondary II will take this test. For information about this test please see: NWEA Home - NWEA

Travel Days

Given the difficulty of getting out of the country, we are building a travel day into the October vacation. We will have Parent Teacher Conferences from 1 PM- 6:30 PM on October 12th on Zoom or in-person (some Middle School conferences will start at 12) and we will not have school on October 13th. October 12th will be a 12:45 dismissal. We understand that not everyone may be able to attend on this date – if you cannot, please reach out to the teachers to find a convenient time to meet!

I hope you enjoy a peaceful and joyful weekend.

Sincerely,
Rachel Geary

| Message From The PTO

Hello KIS Community!

If you missed the previous issue of the Kozak Korner, I want to introduce you to a very important part of the KIS Community - the Parent-Teacher Organization or PTO.

What is the PTO?

We are a group of parents, teachers and administrators who volunteer our time to plan community events, run the PTO school store, create a friendly atmosphere, and provide a "bridge" between parents and the administration. It was the PTO that organized the treats for students, teachers and staff for the first day of school.

How does the PTO pay for its activities?

The PTO uses the funds raised from the PTO store to pay for our activities. The PTO store is currently open Monday-Friday from 15:30-16:30 in the school lobby.

We sell school supplies and KIS-themed clothing and toys.  We may also raise money during some of our events.

What is KIS Moms & Dads?

KIS Moms & Dads (https://www.facebook.com/groups/kismomsdads/?ref=share_group_link) is a private group on Facebook for KIS parents and the PTO. It is a great way to find out what's going on with the PTO.  To join please complete the membership questions.

How to join PTO?

It's simple - just send me an email at helengarbuz@yahoo.com or talk to one of our members at the PTO store.  I also speak Ukrainian and Russian, so no need to worry about your English!

What's Next?

The PTO is planning a Welcome Potluck Picnic!

Date: Saturday, 23 September 2023
Time: 12:00 - 16:00
Address: Svyatoshyns'ky Provulok 3a

The event will take place at KIS campus. We are planning on having a "potluck", which means every guest / family brings food or/and drinks to share.

If you are planning on coming, please take a minute to fill in the form and let us know what you will be bringing:

Dear Parents,

Kyiv International School strives to provide your children with positive educational experiences that are characterized by caring, supportive relationships and free from neglect or abuse of any kind. We are committed to working with you to ensure that the school maintains this type of environment.

Quality Schools International (QSI) has developed a Child Safeguarding and Protection Handbook, which has been adapted to and adopted by this school. When parents enrol their child(ren) at Kyiv International School we expect that they agree to work in partnership with the school and they understand and agree to the child protection Code of Conduct.

Protocols outlined in the handbook are aligned with the QSI Mission Statement, Exit Outcomes, and Success Orientations, as well as these two articles from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child:

Article 19: Protection from abuse and neglect

. . . Shall protect the child from all forms of maltreatment by parents or others responsible for the care of the child and establish appropriate social programs for the prevention of abuse . . .

Article 34: Sexual exploitation

. . . Shall protect children from sexual exploitation and abuse, including prostitution and involvement in pornography.

To help our students to learn and grow in a safe environment, the following educational components are included in the school’s Child Safeguarding and Protection plan:

  • Age-appropriate lesson plans to foster understanding personal safety, needs, and rights in each classroom.
  • Parent information sessions and resources regarding the school’s Child Safeguarding and Protection programs and policies.
  • Faculty and staff professional development workshops on recognizing and reporting child abuse and neglect.

Thank you for your support in maintaining a school and community in which students, staff, and parents feel safe and happy. If you have any questions about the Child Safeguarding and Protection plan or any other school policies, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
Tetiana Rutkovska
Child Protection Lead
