Administration Notice
Dear KIS Parent/Guardian,
The 21st Century learner is growing up in a world surrounded by technology. Our goal is to optimize technology tools for instruction and offer a variety of options that your child and their teacher may use.
Please look at the list of Educational Websites KIS will use below (note, not all websites will be used by your child – grade level is indicated next to each): https://kyiv.qsi.org/learning/kis-website-list-2022-23
We will use these platforms to offer instruction in core academics and digital citizenship and give strategies that may assist your child in safely using the internet. In some cases, to create the logins for some Educational Websites, teachers need to use data regarding the students (Name, Last Name, Date of Birth, E-mail, etc.).
Therefore, we request your permission to allow teachers to use these educational websites with your child. Please fill out this form at your earliest convenience. Fill out the form once for each child:
For Elementary or Middle School please complete this Form.
For Secondary School please fill out this Form.
If you have any questions about a particular website, please don't hesitate to ask your child's teacher.
Sincerely,
KIS Administration

DI's Message
Dear Elementary and Middle School Families,
This past Wednesday, we celebrated Peace One Day. Students of all ages participated in activities with their teachers with the guiding question, “What does peace look like?” A sampling of our students’ thoughtful and insightful work can be found in the newsletter this week.
Learn more: From their website, “Peace One Day is a non-profit organization whose objective is to institutionalize the International Day of Peace.” Peace One Day | Home
MAP testing starts next week for students in the 6-year-old class and up. Please refer to the MAP testing section of this newsletter. Students will have received information from their teachers, too.
There are a few things that I would like to emphasize:
- Please double check that your child’s device is ready for testing. There is an IT help session on Monday (26th).
- Help your child get a good night of rest and eat a healthy breakfast – this is the best preparation for taking the test.
- Reassure your child with our MAP testing strategy, "Take a breath, read the question, take your best guess, move on". Students are supposed to get about half of the questions wrong on the test, that is how it is designed.
MAP test results will be shared with parents once all testing has been completed. I’ll send more information about how to access and read the reports then.
As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns.

What’s Going on in Secondary?
Wow! Four weeks of classes. It has gone quickly; I am happy to say that most students seem engaged and focused. Ms. Rech and I continue to meet with students and families if we see that students are struggling to be successful. We recognize that online delivery has its challenges and hope to alleviate difficulties. Please encourage your child to walk away from the computer at lunchtime and get a break from the screen!
We had a Secondary Morning Mindset on Wednesday to celebrate Peace One Day and it was wonderful to see the group together. You will find the thoughtful pieces that students created during this time in this issue of Kozak Korner.
MAP Testing:
Tuesday, September 27th: 9-11
Thursday, September 29th: 11-12:30
Students will meet in the Morning Mindset Team and testing will be held there. We tested device readiness this week and students had an opportunity to ask questions.
Please feel free to email me with questions, concerns or ideas: rachel-geary@kyiv.qsi.org

Learning Stories & Week Highlights
This Is Us: Educator Profile
Leanne Hume
Titles: Secondary Teacher
Why am I teaching: I did NOT. AT ALL. EVER. It was the one job I said I would NEVER do. So I got a theatre honours degree in both performance and production as well as my Actra and Equity cards as well. BUT...wherever I went... I kept being given teaching jobs...and so after 14 years of "acting" like a teacher I got me certification. Truth be told, I LOVE It...who knew.I don’t exactly why, I am not sure if there was a defining moment for me to decide that’s what I want to do at all, more just various pieces coming together throughout my life, I apologize for not knowing exactly how it happened. But as for why, now that I can answer, and it comes down to a few key things. First, I want to help people and I feel like being a teacher is the best way for me to do that. Second, I know how important a good teacher can be to a student. And third, I enjoy teaching, talking to children, listening to them, trying to understand their emotional world and to be a good role model for them.
Favourite Quote: '"Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans".
Favourite thing about KIS: PEOPLE - the students, my colleagues, my kids! 110% the people. The people make the place.I am really happy and proud to be a part of KIS. My favorite thing about working at KIS is our friendly and caring community.
Art Class in Kindergarten
Teacher: Nataliya Chervonyk
In a 5-year-old Art class we were practicing directed drawing to model and teach students how to look closely at something and draw it. Directed drawing is a step-by-step approach to teach children how to draw. It enhances their ability to listen carefully, pay close attention to details, use descriptive language, and follow directions. Directed drawing is a great way to build confidence and help students view themselves as artists!
Marble Runs in Kindergarten
Teacher: Sarah Lopert
5 years finished the unit on movement by creating marble runs. They were able to understand motion, gravity, and friction. We practiced first online, with various marble building games, then put our plans into action.
IB Film Class
Senior Year is Under Way for The KIS IB Film Class of 2023
Teacher: Bob Hume
Today marks the end of the fourth full week of classes at KIS.
For the ten Sec IV IB students, that means a long process is now well underway -- that of completing both QSI units for the Academic Diploma and the assessment tasks for the IB Diploma.
Each IB student takes six ‘group’ and three ‘core’ courses. Every one has a prescribed set of assessments that must be completed in a delicate sequence over the course of their senior year.
In IB Film, both students, Nika and Nikita, earned excellent results last year, and are in great positions do well in their final year.
First up for them is a textual analysis, for which they’ll choose one film from a list of four prescribed films. This year’s options are:
Bonnie and Clyde [Director: Arthur Penn] 1967, USA
Boy [Director: Taika Waititi] 2010, New Zealand
Children of Men [Director: Alfonso Cuaron] 2006, UK
Cidade de Deus (City of God) [Director: Fernando Meirelles & Kátia Lund] 2002, Brazil
