Director's Message

Dear KIS,

It is crazy to think that we are already heading into October. I feel like as we move into the school year more and more opportunities are being put in place. More and more is happening at the school and I would like to point you in the direction of some regular and important community opportunities.

Regular Coffee Chats
We will continue to have a different focus for these meetings. We hope for these to benefit the community and for the topics and discussions to be valuable, educational, and with some useable take-aways. Look for these in the KK and reminders as KIS Informers.

School-Wide Virtual Events/Activities
We know that it is difficult to get everyone together, but we are planning several different ways to get people together from the many different areas around the world.

Community In-Person Events
A huge thank you to our PTO group who are meeting and planning the first in person event this weekend. We hope that this will be the first of many more to come. If you are interested in being a part of this group of parents and staff, just let us know.

Big Idea Activities Going On At The School
At times, we will have special days and activities connected to some big ideas that we are celebrating and learning at KIS. For example, Monday, Oct. 3rd, is Blue Shirt Day. Everyone at home is welcome to wear blue shirts and celebrate kindness. Want to send us a picture to share how you are connecting school to home? We would love to also share this out with others.

We really hope to promote a community of belonging, care, consideration, and solidarity. We hope you will be able to join us in any ways possible.

Once a Kozak, Always a Kozak!

Sincerely,

Luke Woodruff
Director

 DI's Message

Dear Elementary and Middle School Families,

Monday, October 3 is Blue Shirt Day at KIS. We are asking all students to wear a Blue Shirt to show that they support KIS being a safe and welcoming place for all students. Blue shirt day is part of a world-wide initiative that schools from all over the world participate in, you can learn more here: Blue Shirt Day

We are a bit more than halfway complete with MAP testing. Most students completed their Mathematics and Language Usage test this past week. Next week, students will complete the Reading test on Tuesday. If students were absent or started but need to complete a test, Thursday, October 6th is the designated make-up day. Your child’s teacher will organize make-up testing.

MAP test results will be shared with parents once all testing has been completed. I’ll send more information about how to access and read the reports at that time.

Next week, I will share information about our upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences and the end of the first Quintile of school.

As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns.

 DI's Message

What’s Going on in Secondary?

As we head towards October Break, teachers are encouraging students to get caught up and submit any missing assignments. We hope that students will not have any work to finish during the week off, and that they will take that time to relax and enjoy themselves.

Secondary I and II students will finish MAP testing on Tuesday, October 4th at 1 PM. The results of these MAP tests will be shared in time for our Parent Teacher Conferences on October 21st. Secondary I and II teachers will have access to these and will be able to use them to identify and help your child in both their areas of strength and weakness.

Secondary IV students have been meeting with Ms. Rech about university options for next year. This can be a stressful time for our Secondary IV students – please reach out to us if your family needs support in this complicated application process.

We have a variety of activities for students to enjoy: StuCo, Cooking Club, Photo Walk and the PTO picnic. I hope that some of our Kozaks take the opportunity to get together with their peers in person or virtually and enjoy some peace and laughter.

Morning Mindset is an important part of our day, and we appreciate students' commitment and contributions to this time. They continue to enjoy the “t-shirt game” with Mr. Prima, as evidenced below:

Sincerely,

Languages Other Than English

Week of languages

The European Day of Languages has been celebrated every year on September 26 since 2001. The slogan is "Talk to me!" The linguistic diversity is the key elements of the rich cultural heritage of the continent.

The Council of Europe, supporting the plurilingualism, created this site: https://edl.ecml.at/Games/Talktome/tabid/1878/language/Default.aspx  where you can find a lot of interesting facts, games, quizzes about and in 41 official European languages.

Do you like palindromes, words and sentences that read the same backwards, for example:  Was it a cat I saw? They have been popular since ancient time.  Do you know the longest word in your language?... Please, enjoy!

Next week, we will join this movement too. LOE department has a good tradition to organize The Week of Languages at the end of September or at the beginning of October. Every day will do something special in our languages: Monday - French, Tuesday - German, Wednesday - Russian, Thursday - Spanish and Friday - Ukrainian.  It will be fun.

Parlez-vous français? Sprechen Sie Deutch? Вы говорите по-русски? Habla Usted Español ? Розмовляєте українською? ... Each member of our international and multilingual community speaks at least 3 languages. We would like to know more about you and have prepared a survey for students, parents and teachers. It will take just a couple minutes and will give us a precious data. How many languages do you speak? - LINK to the FORM

Thank you in advance for your participation! Merci! Danke! Спасибо! Gracias! Дякуємо! ...

  Learning Stories & Week Highlights

  This Is Us: Educator Profile

Olena Petrunyok
Titles: Teacher Assistant

Why am I teaching: I am not sure if there was a defining moment for me to decide that’s what I want to do, more just various pieces coming together throughout my life. But as for why, it comes down to a few key things. First, I want to help people and I feel like being a teacher is the best way for me to do that. Second, I know how important a good teacher can be to a student. And third, I enjoy teaching, talking to children, listening to them, trying to understand their emotional world and to be a good role model for them.

Favourite Quote:"Never Give Up!"

Favourite thing about KIS: I am really happy and proud to be a part of KIS. My favorite thing about working at KIS is our friendly and caring community.

Peace One Day in Middle School

In order to recognize “Peace One Day” the students of the 13 year old middle school class worked on individual projects to promote the many definitions of peace.

To begin with, we as a class, discussed the word itself. What does it mean to you? When do you use it?

We continued by examining different phrases that contain the word peace, for example “peace of mind’ “come in peace” and even “peace and quiet.”

And so that led to each student creating an individual canva that displays their own thoughts and ideas. We as a group thought the results were pretty cool. From spending holidays with your family, meditation and mindfulness to the first photo you took after escaping a conflict zone.

We hope you enjoy them too!

IB Language and Literature

This week students in IB Language and Literature Year 2 have been recording their Individual Oral Assessments. This assessment asks students to focus on a global issue of significance and to discuss it in the context of a literary and non-literary work. Students explored some relevant and meaningful issues and had the opportunity to display their knowledge of texts studied in Year 1. Visualizing their issues helped students express both their understanding and the significance of these!
