Director's Message

Dear KIS Community,

This year is moving by very quickly. I can't believe we are already at the fall break.

I want to thank our PTO team for putting together a community picnic. It sounds like it was a wonderful time for students, parents, and staff to get together. Some meeting people for the first time. I know they are already planning more.

I hope you all have a restful break and we look forward to seeing you back at school on October 10th!

Sincerely,

Luke Woodruff
Director
Kyiv International School

 DI's Message

Dear Elementary and Middle School Families,

The first six weeks of school are behind us!  That means it is time for a well-earned break.  Wherever you are, I hope you can enjoy time with your loved ones this break!

The week after the break is a busy time for us; we have two important milestones that coincide during that time: Parent Teacher Conferences and the end of the first Quintile (which brings the first set of Student Reports).

Parent Teacher Conferences: Our conferences will be held on Friday, 21 October. On Monday (17th) parents will get an email from the office with conference details. Students are welcome but not required to attend Fall conferences.  During the discussions on that day, we will be asking parents for feedback regarding their child’s experiences with two new parts of our school day – Morning Mindset and Passion Projects.  Teachers will share early successes and areas needing support.  Together parents and teachers are united in helping children be successful academically and emotionally!

End of the first quintile: The end of the first of our five academic periods also coincides with the week after break.  That means that before Parent-Teacher conferences you’ll also be able to access your child’s first status report (report card).  Reports are accessed from the Moodle Parent Portal (Log in to Moodle at https://study.kis.net.ua/).  If you are new to KIS and QSI, you’ll quickly notice that we use somewhat different letter grades to communicate progress.  Please see the chart below for definitions for each letter grade.  Your child’s teacher will also be able to answer questions during Parent Teacher conferences.

MAP Reports: Our Fall cycle of MAP testing has wrapped up – parents, thank you for supporting your child through this process. MAP reports will be available on the Parent Moodle site starting on Tuesday, 18 October.  On Parent Teacher Conference Day I will be hosting a session at 12:30 called, "Understanding your child's MAP report" - please see the flyer in this newsletter for more details.  All parents are welcome to join.

I wish you and your family a wonderful break!  As always, please feel free to reach out with questions or concerns:

Middle School Office: kismsoffice@kyiv.qsi.org

Best regards,

Mrs. Carla Grossman

What’s Going on In Secondary

Taking a Break
Fall Break is upon us! Please enjoy this time. Students should not have homework – this is a time for them to step away from the screen, relax and refresh. Even if students are behind in their work and plan to use the break to catch up, it’s still very important that they take a few days away from their schoolwork.

Parent Teacher Conferences in Secondary
We are looking forward to seeing you on October 21st to discuss the year so far. Parents (and students if they would like) will join a panel of teachers on Zoom. We will talk about students’ strengths and areas where they may struggle as well as ways we can help them with these areas. We are interested in your perspective on Morning Mindset, Independent Study and Homework, as well as any concerns you may have.

On Monday, October 17th, parents will receive an invitation to the conference with the time and the Zoom link. If you would like a translator, please mention this when you reply to confirm.

Morning Mindset
We are making some changes to Morning Mindset.

On Mondays, we will do something fun and unique with the whole group on Zoom.

Tuesday-Thursday students will meet with their grade level, like now.

On Fridays, students can choose! There will be four rooms to choose from and students pick what interests them.

More information on Friday choice will be on October 17th.

Enjoy the week off!

Sincerely,

Languages Other Than English

Week of Languages

This week, we celebrated languages. There are so many linguists at KIS! Some of them, according to the forms completed, speak 7 languages (!) and they continue exploring this interesting and colorful world.

In LOE classes, every day, we learnt useful words and expressions in French, German, Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian. The kids could teach as well. Now, they already know which language will be the next. For several the choice is difficult, and they will learn probably two.

When it was our language day, we played, sang songs, watched videos, had different presentations and cooked (the Guacamole was very popular!). We spoke about linguistic and cultural diversity, traditions and holidays (Oktoberfest is taking place right now in Germany, the Columbus day is coming soon (October 12th) and this is a very important date in both Americas).

Inspired by our discussions, we made posters and paragraphs. Two students even wrote beautiful poems in German:

On Monday, at the Morning Mindset, all the Secondary students played a special Kahoot. The winners are: Fedote (Sec.1), Rienat (Sec.2), Ollie (Sec.3), Anzhelika (Sec.4) and Anna (IB Year 2). Congratulations!

It's such a pleasure to have so much fun before the break! Thank you for your participation!

We are waiting for new LOE events!

Sincerely,

Success Orientations

Dear KIS Parents and Students,

During our SO sessions this year we are developing students’ personal orientations that lead to success. Personal habits, the ability to interact successfully with others, reliability, responsibility, diligent work habits, promptness, keeping your word, kindness, and other factors in this realm are at least as important as the knowledge one learns and the competencies one gains.

Our first topic was Group Interaction. During this last month students from 5 to 11 years old in their SO classes learned, discussed and practiced how to contribute ideas which are related to the goals of the group, control emotions when discussing different points of view, to be a person who does not discourage responsible behavior or learning by others and to assist the leadership of others by cooperating and being good followers.

Students also displayed kindness when expressing an opinion and a cooperative attitude. Most importantly, we had lots of fun playing, learning and interacting together.

Sincerely,
