ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOL
DI's Message
Dear Elementary and Middle School Families,
Students have been working on learning the choreography for the Dance for Kindness project – I look forward to seeing our final product!
Morning Mindset addition:
Starting the week of November 14th, homeroom teachers will begin weaving aspects of our Keeping Safe curriculum into our Morning Mindset sessions. This is not a new program for us, but has been adjusted to work within the limitations of online learning. The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum is one part of our comprehensive approach to keeping children safe. All teachers leading the morning sessions have received training in the use of the Curriculum. KS:CPC is an evidence based, best practice curriculum developed collaboratively with child protection experts, teachers, educational leaders and other professionals. Parents can learn more here: Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum information for parents and carers (education.sa.gov.au)
Additionally, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns.

CAS Book Recommendation Project
Dear Community,
As you know, Secondary CAS (Creativity and Service) Students launched a Book Club project and will be putting a review for the books that stand beyond the regular school program and make an explicit impact on the world outlook in individual's mind.
CAS Book Club intend to encourage students to read about subjects—such as race, gender, BIPOC LGBTQIA+, and many other topics—through books for middle-grade and young adults written by different authors.
By the way, the whole community is welcome to participate in book recommendation! So if you read the book on the similar topic and you liked it or you think that this book was worthy of reading, please share your recommendation with us. How to do it? It's very simple - just use this FORM.
LEARNING STORIES & WEEK HIGHLIGHTS
This Is Us: Educator Profile
Svitlana Ionova
Titles: Music Teacher
Why am I teaching: To me the question was to become a Music teacher. If we ask any student from any music school, what is the most difficult subject for them, or what is the subject they don’t like or hate, most of them will say “music theory” or “solfeggio.” When I was a student my favorite subject at school was Music theory. That was only because of the teacher I had there at school. She was the one who’s found the right words to explain the most difficult subject in very simple way. From that very time I knew for sure that everything depends on a teacher. There is no bad or difficult subject, there is bad teacher, who doesn’t know how to explain it. As soon as I realized that, I knew that I want to help students to understand music better, to learn how music was created, who were the composers, how to compose music or songs, why do they sound like that, how to write music on a paper, what to start with and everything.
The best thing for me as for music teacher to know that some of my students became musicians.
Favourite Quote: "Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans". -John Lennon
Favourite thing about KIS: My favorite thing about KIS is that our school is very international in any ways. There is no signs of nationalism at the school and that gives us this confident feeling.
Literature & Writing Classes in Secondary
Teacher: Amanda Denney
The academic year is well underway, and students are working hard to close units. Thank you to all the parents and students who participated in PTC; it was nice to “see” you and tell you about your child’s strengths in class.
Literature II, Writing II students are currently working on their third units: nonfiction and persuasive writing, respectively. Each week students write a timed essay and submit for feedback.
Science Class
Teacher: Sheri Hinsvark
12 and 13-year-old students have been busy in Mrs. Hinsvark’s science class exploring how needs of animals are met by body systems working together. They have been selecting different ways to demonstrate their understanding of systems working together with the digestive system to provide nutrients and energy animals need to survive.
Morning Mindset Pancakes
The 13 year old class decided that the best way to prepare for a day of study is to make and consume breakfast together. And so they took over their kitchens to make a delicious pancake breakfast. It was a lot of fun for all, except perhaps for those who were left to clean up.
"Travel Challenge" in Secondary
This week, teams of Secondary IV students worked together in Morning Mindset to design a trip based on a budget. Students then voted on the best trip. This fun and creative trip won - congratulations to the winners for their innovation!
NHS (National Honor Society) Blog
As Russian troops prepared to invade Ukraine in February 2022, Kyiv International School moved to online instruction as a precaution. When the invasion took place two weeks later, a large majority of the 800 students—who come from all over the world—enrolled in other schools outside Ukraine, and staff members who were not Ukrainian remained outside the country in various locations. At the start of the school year, 100 students, as well as some staff, remained, most of them still living in Kyiv. Rachel Geary is the secondary director of instruction and an IB program coordinator at the school. She’s also the National Honor Society (NHS) adviser, and she has worked to keep the program going despite the immense challenges. She shares what that has been like this school year.
Since I took over as NHS adviser, we’ve just been meeting and trying to figure out what we can do since we are all online, and we have students all over the world. This summer, the government had given schools permission to reopen if they have a bomb shelter, which gives you a sense of what life is like in Kyiv. So, we started building a bomb shelter. Given the most recent attacks, the situation has become increasingly volatile. We will continue to operate online until we are allowed to reopen.
