Director's Message
Dear KIS Community,
It has been a wonderful week full of smiles, music, holiday spirit, and the joy that only comes before a school holiday. I think that everyone is ready for a nice break. We sincerely hope that everyone is safe during this holiday season wherever you might be or go.
I want to express my gratitude to our entire KIS community for making the first part of our school year a success. We are so lucky to have so many wonderful students, parents, and teachers. I have been amazed to watch, time and time again, how people step up and show up during challenging times. Thank you so much for your patience and support.
On behalf of KIS, I want to wish you all a wonderful winter break and happy holidays! I hope that 2022 brings us all good health, happiness, and joy. We hope that it will also bring us more opportunities to be together!
HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
Sincerely,
Luke Woodruff

Learning Stories & Highlights
Intensive English
Inspired by Kindness…
Teacher: Oksana Melnyk
It is a holiday season… Magic is in the air.
We were discussing themes, character traits, and the vivid spectrum of feelings imbedded in a 2 min video. That discussion took us to the next level: What is the difference between sympathy and empathy? We spoke kindness… And that is how the idea of our next creative piece of writing was born.
Based on the themes raised in the video and the list of nouns presented, the students were asked to communicate kindness, hope, and faith through their writing. Moreover, prove that the nouns they were introduced to are more than a part of speech, more than just words…
The work is still in progress… Ideas are blazing around.
Cannot wait to see the final result!
Believe in miracles…
Happy Holidays, everyone!

AP Psychology Class: The Brain
Teacher: Jacques Kaufmann
This year our AP psychology group engaged in a new activity that happened around the world following an initiative from a peer in the US, our lab assistants worked at an amazing speed to get the materials ready for this, and the activity turned out to be a very successful one.
Students teamed up to recreate the human brain using Styrofoam heads, play dough, tooth picks, and some paper and markers.
The plan was to model the brain parts including its glands, and students were really excited about doing this, and they definitely learned a lot while they were working, of course the make-up session at the end was inevitable, and everyone had fun doing it, we even had some guest students helping.

Exercise and Cellular Respiration
Teacher: Dr. Sunitha Nagaraj
Cellular respiration is a chemical reaction that occurs in our cells to create energy: when we are exercising, our muscle cells are creating ATP (energy) to contract. Cellular respiration requires oxygen (this is why we breathe) and creates carbon dioxide (we breathe out).
IB Biology students understood how exercise increased muscle activity and affects the rate of cellular respiration and thus energy production in our cells. The more carbon dioxide we breathe into the bromothymol blue solution, the faster it will change color to blue/yellow.

HS Math Club
Teacher: Oksana Chemerys
Last Thursday, on December 9, our HS Math Club members participated in the second ASMA contest.
Leo, Omkar, Shon, Iosif, Anna E., Yejee, Yegor R., Sasha F, Liza P and Maksym S. worked very hard to solve difficult problems from different math topics. Everybody did good job! The winner of this contest in our club is Yejee! She solved 6 problems out of 7 correctly! Incredible! Leo is in the second place in this round! He solved 5 problems out of 7 correctly!
Leo's cumulative score in two rounds is 10 (thehighest in the club for now ). Yejee's cumulative score in two rounds is 9 (second place in our club ), and Omkar got the third place in our club with a cumulative score of 7. Way to go, Mathathletes!
