Director's Message
Dear KIS Families,
KIS is planning to move into Phase II of our plan to have students back on campus. This message is to inform the entire community of these next steps. The KIS office will begin reaching out to interested families to confirm attendance and communicate details.
Community Center
The idea for phase II is to provide the space and opportunity for willing students, teachers, and parents to be on campus.
First Day
Our first scheduled day for students is Wednesday, February 8th. We hope a soft opening before the February break will also give us the opportunity to work out any issues we may have.
Daily Schedule
School will follow the same bell schedule (9:00-3:30) that is in place, so that our online and on-campus students and teachers will be connected at the same time.
Flexible Approach
We understand that some individuals may be in situations that make daily attendance challenging. We are fully prepared to be as flexible as possible to support students wherever they might be.
Staffing in Kyiv at KIS
Currently, we are having those who are in Kyiv and willing come support the operation of this phase. We will use Monday and Tuesday, February 6th-7th for staff meetings and preparation. There are several new procedures that will need to be practiced and assessed.
This means that several of our teachers will still be online and connecting with students who will be together on campus and still working online.
Emergency Preparedness and Communication
KIS takes the security and safety of everyone very seriously. We want to make sure that we are ready and improving in all areas of safety possible.
We will begin confirming with families their attendance and sending out further information concerning these first days.
Thank you for your support!
Sincerely,
Luke Woodruff
Director

ELEMENTARY & MIDDLE SCHOOL
DI's Message
Dear Elementary and Middle School Families,
I have counted twice, and unless I am mistaken, we have arrived at the halfway point in the school year! Time has a peculiar way of moving both quickly and so … so ... slowly, doesn’t it?
During the school year, mileposts such as the January Conferences help us adjust and improve in our quest to help students reach their year-end learning goals. The student feedback part of our conferences was hopefully the beginning of a conversation that will continue throughout the year. Open conversations between students and teachers are the key to success! Parents are encouraged to write to teachers anytime – if you are unsure of who to contact, you can always write to the office for assistance.

Hope that you enjoyed reading short description about it. Right now I am working on chapter five.

SECONDARY
DI's Message
What’s going on in Secondary?
The Student Feedback Conferences have been very meaningful. The students crafted thoughtful and considerate feedback, provided us with suggestions to improve our practices, given us new ideas to consider and discussed what they appreciate in our classrooms. We truly believe that student advocacy is an essential skill, and I am pleased with our first effort to facilitate a feedback process was successful.
We are looking forward to seeing some of our secondary students on campus in February. It will be nice to have our beautiful facilities being used.
Next Friday, we have a team participating in the CEESA Virtual Speech and Debate contest – we wish them the best of luck!
Sincerely,
Rachel Geary

School Day Schedule
NHS Volunteer Project
Our KIS NHS Chapter has initiated a volunteer project with The Atlantic School, a Ukrainian school that offers classes in English. Our students are facilitating (virtually) a debate club, a cinema club, a homework club and an arts club for this school. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to work with others and help students in Ukraine improve their English skills in a fun and engaging manner. All KIS secondary students are invited to join this initiative if they are interested and should reach out to NHS president Omkar Nayak for more information: omkar-nayak@kyiv.qsi.org

LEARNING STORIES & WEEK HIGHLIGHTS
This Is Us: Educator Profile
Alla Mironenko
Titles: Teacher Assistant
Why am I teaching: It is very simple. I LOVE kids. Teacher spends the bigger part of the day with students. It is great to be a big part of their lives and see them grow and explore the world together.
Favourite Quote: "You can not go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending."
Favourite thing about KIS: I like that our school is international. I love people I am working with ( I mean the whole community).
The International Day of Education
Teacher: Dana Horbunova
Education is a human right, a public good, and a public responsibility. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education in peace and development.
On that day, my German Intermediate I class also celebrated this special day. First, the students shared in German their thoughts on the importance of "Tag der Bildung" (Day of Education).
Practice of Giving Feedback in a Constructive Manner
Teacher: Amy Mims
In preparation for conferences this Friday, the 9 year old’s have spent some time discussing advocacy and practiced giving feedback in a constructive manner. Students analyzed short video clips of people giving and receiving feedback before jumping into the SeeSaw activity aimed at better preparing them to speak up about what it is that will help them learn better and improve their overall learning experience.
Secondary Study: Government and Economics
World History and Geography
Human Geography
Global Studies
Teacher: Kyle Mims
As students returned to school this year, they are finding new and innovative ways to learn. Microsoft Teams is providing a platform for students to engage with their classes in a variety of ways, including whiteboard activities. This is especially beneficial for classes such as Government and Economics, where students can collaborate on projects and presentations with ease. In World History, students are engaging with the classic World War I novel, All Quiet on the Western Front.
NHS Volunteer Project
Our National Honor Society has launched an after-school English Club with The Atlantic School in Kyiv, Ukraine. Here a volunteer has enjoyed making dreamcatchers with the students from that school. This program is supported by our teachers from KIS.
