Kozak Korner #23. February 03, 2023

Director's Message

Dear KIS Families,

It is hard to believe that it is already February.

This next week, we will be shifting to Phase II and begin to have students and teachers back on campus. The focus is on community and being together. We hope that beyond connecting with other students and teachers online, that those who are on campus will have a feeling and sense of community. We also understand that not everything will be the same as it once was and that things will start small but hope that over time it will continue to grow and build.

On Monday and Tuesday, we will be checking and practicing our emergency procedures and running through the schedule. On Wednesday, February 8h, we will welcome students back.

We will send out a separate KIS informer to those who are planning to join on campus on Monday.

Sincerely,

Luke Woodruff
Director
Kyiv International School

 DI's Message

Dear Elementary and Middle School Families,

We are busy making plans to open our campus next week! There will be more detailed information in the coming days but here are some general reminders:

  • The on-campus and online schedule will align to allow for our classes to meet synchronously. There will be an on-campus teacher helping students connect to teachers that are online.
  • Students who are continuing online will still be able to connect and collaborate with their on-campus friends.
  • On campus students should plan on bringing their devices and chargers from home to connect to online teachers. We are looking to adjust to using school-based devices for our youngest students soon.
  • Students attending on-campus must bring headphones to reduce cross-over noise.
  • Students planning on attending school on campus will need to bring their own food, there is not a food service program.

We know there will be unexpected surprises as we work out the wrinkles in our on-campus program. However, we are all very excited to be taking these steps together! If you are interested in having your child attend school on campus and haven’t already let us know, please fill out this form as soon as possible: On Campus for Phase 2

Please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns.

What’s going on in Secondary?

This week two of our Secondary IV students participated in the CEESA Winter Virtual Debate Tournament. We are proud that our Kozaks continue to represent KIS!

This week Ms. Rech and I met with Secondary II students and talked about their transcripts, college preparation and IB/AP programs. Students also met with several of our Secondary IV students to ask questions and get their insight into the Secondary experience. Next week we will be meeting with Secondary I students.

This week we announced our plans for the graduation ceremony for the Class of 2023.

CAS Book Review

Age: 8+
Amari And The Night Brother” is a middle-grade fantasy written by B. B. Alston. The story follows a 13-year-old girl named Amari and her journey in investigating her older brother's disappearance. When her brother goes missing, Amari has no idea what to do or how to help except to spread his photo on an online missing persons form. However, one day, a magical delivery man gives her a box that can only be opened at the end of her school year, and Amari finally gets a clue about her brother. Armed with the objects from the package, she embarks on attending a summer camp dedicated to children with magical abilities and protecting the unknown in order to learn more about herself and the secret life of her family.

This book is perfect for any dreamer who wishes to escape into a fascinating world of magic, mystery, and danger. The main character is highly lovable, and you cannot help but fall in love with most of the cast. This book is the perfect getaway destination from reality!

  LEARNING STORIES & WEEK HIGHLIGHTS

  This Is Us: Educator Profile

Rachel Geary
Titles: Secondary Director of Instruction

Why am I teaching: I got my first teaching job, because I wanted to live in Asia, and teaching ESL seemed like a great way to do that. I found that I l really enjoyed being in the classroom and working with students of all ages.  I got my M. Ed. and moved to Thailand to work for QSI Phuket.  I loved being a part of this school community, participating in a huge variety of classroom opportunities, sports, activities and community building actions.   KIS was a wonderful move for us and I have loved being a teacher at Kyiv International School.  I have had the opportunity to teach so many things!

Favourite Quote: "I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.” - (Keats)

Favourite thing about KIS: I love the array of opportunities for both staff and students.  I would encourage everyone to grab onto any opportunity! You never know where it will take you.

History and Modern Society
History and Modern Society

Teacher: Zach Montoya

In the 10 year old class, students and teachers alike have gotten to explore cultural studies using a new approach this year. The inquiry method of learning allows the students a chance to independently devise projects based on a theme learned by studying history. In our class we learned about the ancient Mesopotamian civilizations that arose. We used this study as a basis to explore the qualities that define society.

The KIS IB Cohort

Have you had the time or the headspace to watch any non-war news recently? If you have, first and foremost, congratulations on the excellent multi-tasking ability that implies, and second, you may have noticed a piece about A-list Hollywood Hotty Jeremy Renner getting pancaked by a snowplough while digging out from under a mountain of fresh powder at the end of his driveway.
