Kozak Korner #26. March 25, 2022

Director's Message

Dear KIS Community,

It is hard to believe we are at the end of March and soon April will be here. This is always one of my favorite times of the year in Kyiv, as the restaurants would begin to spread into the streets and the days become longer.

Planning 2022-23 School Year
We are still discussing what the next school year may look like and put in place a plan for our staff to operate however we need to with those who will still be with us. I will be sharing out more information concerning this next week. Essentially, we are looking at the following possibilities and how we may transition from one to the other depending on the circumstances.

  • Online program outside of Ukraine
  • Online/onsite program outside of Ukraine
  • Online/onsite program inside of Ukraine
  • Onsite program inside of Ukraine/back on campus

Re-Enrollment Process
We normally do this during the month of March, but we have bumped this to April. It seems a little odd to go through this process right now, but we do need to start thinking about who is planning to return to KIS. We know that it will be difficult to determine enrolment, but we need to have as good an idea as possible to make the best preparations we can.

So much on how we move forward is dependent on several things outside of our control, so we want to have a plan in place that allows for us to adjust and shift as needed.

   Yearbook Update

Every year, Kyiv International School works with Jostens Yearbooks to produce a history of the year. The book is produced by secondary students who are enrolled in Media II, and many of the photographs are taken by Photography I/II students. This year, with only two students enrolled in Media II, a group of dedicated students also volunteered to help create our yearbook, and in September, we debated and eventually decided on the theme, Home, for the 2021-2022 yearbook. This theme, of course, now has a much deeper and more poignant meaning for our KIS community and our friends and family in Ukraine.

In the last month, a very small group of students has continued to work on the yearbook, committed to ensuring we have a memorable and accurate history of this school year. We thank all the parents and students who sent us photos of their families and friends, with pets, in their “classrooms” and in Kyiv.

We are working with Jostens Yearbooks to decide how we can best deliver this yearbook to everyone in our school community, spread out all over the world. In the next few weeks, we should have concrete plans for this, and will publish more information here in the Kozak Korner.

Here are some sneak-peak pages from our 2021-2022 yearbook, Home.

  Learning Stories & Highlights

Welcome To 3NY Virtual Class!

Teacher: Natalia Yegorova

Our topic for this week was ”Zoo Animals”. We learned that Zoos were made to bring wildlife closer to humans.  Zoos give us easy access to rare animals. We would have never been able to see what some animals looked like without Zoos. They help scientists in their studies and discover new things. In addition, zoos are a great source of entertainment for people. Kids love visiting zoos and interacting with animals. During the week we were very busy and tried different activities: we named and counted all our Zoo Animals, played animal sound guessing game, listened to the stories Zoo Day by Pam Schiller, Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell, Curious George Visits the Zoo by Margret and H.A. Rey’s and took virtual tour to Australia Zoo with Robert Irwin.

Learning About Reptiles

Teacher: Liza Licvinava

Throughout this week in 4LL class students were learning about reptiles. Getting up closer to the reptiles and learning more about them help children to see how useful these creatures can be and why they’re an important part of our ecosystems. By engaging children in stories, drawing, hands-on fun activities about reptiles, they’re learning how to love and care about scaly-skinned, cold-blooded, egg laying animals. During the Art class our students were enjoying directed drawing activity. Since directed drawing is step-by-step, our 4-year-old students were trying their best to wait to draw only when teacher told them to. Finally, the artists have got their incredible drawings of scaly, cold-blooded snakes, chameleons, turtles, and crocodiles.

Masters of Numbers

Teacher: Katarina Legan

Mrs. Legan's 5yo class mastered numbers 1 - 100 during our online classes. We can write any number and count in any order by heart. Our favorite game is "hide and seek" using the interactive 100 chart. Kids need to locate the hidden numbers on the hundred chart and to write them down on the paper on their own. It is an engaging and fun activity.

LOE Russian Classes Are Against the Russian War

Kyiv International School is endlessly proud of its staff and community members who selflessly volunteer and work hard to support Ukraine in every possible way and at every place. No matter where we are, we Stand With Ukraine!

Our KIS teachers continue to teach online and support our students in a wide variety of ways. Students are reading, writing, exercising, drawing, analyzing, calculating, painting, singing, programming and playing online!

Many of our wonderful KIS staff are also deeply involved in providing humanitarian assistance for Ukraine and for the troops. We would like to highlight several of these staff members here in the Kozak Korner.

The Prima family (Mr. Prima and Mrs. Prima and their two sons, both KIS graduates) are now living in Lviv and are actively involved finding and providing support for both refugees in Lviv, and Ukrainian troops. They have reached out to international companies, with the official backing of local Ukrainian humanitarian organizations, seeking donations of medicine and food. They have used financial donations to buy medicine and medical supplies, locally in Lviv, and send those requested things to the army. They have worked with a local food company to buy large quantities of canned meat for the army and an orphanage. They also help as a link between aid organizations in Poland and the groups and individuals who have pressing and immediate needs in Western Ukraine. Furthermore, they have contacted their many friends and colleagues around the world encouraging them to fund-raise to support Ukraine.

We would like to highlight these two amazing educators, Anatoliy Prima and Julia Prima, who are making a difference in their classrooms and in their community. The Prima family would like to give their heartfelt thanks to those members of our community (teachers, parents, former students, former teachers) who have contributed to this cause.
