Director's Message

Dear KIS Community,

It always takes a bit of time for everyone to get back into the swing of things following a school break. I hope this past week has gone well. I think of our community often - where you all are and what is happening.

I want to wish all the mothers out there a Happy Mother's Day on Sunday. I look at this day with fresh eyes, as I have watched the sacrifice of so many mothers and fathers in Ukraine and think more often of these important parental roles. I have always valued and appreciated how valiantly mothers stand up to protect and fight for their children and families in all aspects of life. Happy Mother's Day!

Victory Day will be on Monday, May 9th, and I just wanted to remind everyone that we will not have school. I continue to be in awe of Ukrainians and the steadfast fight for freedom and liberation of their people, country, and land.

This week, I will be sending out a separate KIS informer with more information about next school year, as I don't want this message to get lost in the newsletter. I know things are still very unpredictable, but we appreciate you continuing to inform the school of your plans concerning next school year.

Sincerely,

Luke Woodruff
Director
Kyiv International School

What is Cinco de Mayo?

Teacher: Daniel Alvarez

Many people believe that “Cinco de Mayo” (May 5th), is the anniversary of the Mexican Independence but they are mistaken, since the Mexican Independence Day is September 16.

In order to understand the origins of the celebration, you need to go back to the middle of 19th century. After the Mexican-American War of 1846-48, Mexico was in a fiscal crisis. In 1861 Mexican President Benito Juárez declared that Mexico was suspending payment on all its foreign debt for two years.

Even though Juárez had said payments would resume in 1863, Great Britain, France and Spain were not satisfied. Although the British and Spanish government backed off, France insisted on using force to secure its debt payments. French Emperor Napoleon III named his relative, Archduke Maximillian of Austria, as ruler of Mexico.

Marching toward Mexico City, the French Army encountered stiff resistance. On May 5, 1862, General Ignacio Zaragoza defeated them in the Battle of Puebla. The Mexican victory was a surprise - the French Army was larger and better equipped.

There is a saying that it's possible to win the battle and to lose the war. The French won other battles, and Maximillian became the ruler in 1864. However, facing Mexican resistance and American pressure, France withdrew its troops in 1867. Nowadays, this holiday is popular wherever there are people of Mexican descent, for example, in the United States.

This week, at KIS, we had a fiesta too. In Spanish classes, students learnt about this important event and celebrated this date. Above all, we remember that “Cinco de Mayo” is a day to recognize the bravery of those who fought against the oppression of the past and those won the freedom of the present.

“Who doesn’t respect and value his past, is not worth the honour of the present, and has no right to a future” - Jozef Pilsudski
