Kozak Korner #31. April 19th, 2024

| Director's Message

Dear Families,

A huge thank you to the community members who participated in the drama production: WOZ. Leanne Hume and her team did an amazing job with this hopeful, joyful show. We appreciate everyone who came to watch! This show spotlights the creativity and commitment of our community – teachers, parents and students!

I would like to remind parents of elementary students that if you remain on campus after school, it is your responsibility to actively supervise your child. That means your child must be in your line of sight and you need to be ready to intervene if necessary. You cannot be in the lobby if your child is outside. Thank you for your help keeping our campus both welcoming AND safe!

Save the date: May 18th. This is our Spring Fling Art Fest – an afternoon filled with games, activities, art and food.

This is not an event you want to miss!

Best regards,
Rachel Geary

| Welcome Our New Teacher for 2024-25!

My name is Amith Ravindar and I’ll be teaching classes related to technology, business, and the social sciences in the high school and middle school next year. I was born and raised in a small town not far from Chicago in the United States, but ended up graduating high school at an international school in Singapore.

I’ve always had a keen interest in computers and technology and I began programming at a young age. This led me to start working as a software developer at startup companies after my 2nd year of university, and I ended up continuing to work in this space for 4 years after graduating from university. During this time, I worked on software that was connected with education, and this led me to pursue a career as an educator.

After leaving the tech industry, I taught Computer Science, Business, and English at the secondary school level in Vietnam, Kyrgyzstan, and Spain before moving to Lviv last year.

My teaching style emphasizes hands-on, project-based tasks and my goal is for my students to develop marketable, immediately monetizable skills.

In my spare time, I run an educational Youtube channel, try and fail to speak Ukrainian properly, and drink coffee at Lviv’s lovely cafes.

| Spring MAP Testing

Spring MAP testing is coming! KIS students will be doing MAP testing during the week of April 22. The make-up sessions will be after the break, during the week of May 6.

The NWEA MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) Test is an advanced tool designed to evaluate and promote your child’s academic growth and learning achievements. What makes this test special is its adaptive nature, ensuring a personalized testing experience that adjusts to your child’s unique learning level. (“NWEA Map - Overview.” TestingMom, 12 Jan. 2024, www.testingmom.com/tests/nwea-map-test/)

The result? You, along with your child’s teachers, get valuable insights into your child’s learning trajectory. These insights can identify areas of strength and pinpoint where additional support might be beneficial. This can help tailor your child’s learning experience, keeping it challenging enough to foster growth, yet achievable enough to maintain confidence and motivation. | "Empower" Lesson Plans

The Empower curriculum integrates the Success Orientations, Social Emotional Learning concepts, and Child Protection principles into individual lessons throughout the year. These lessons will be delivered during a dedicated weekly EMPOWER class time. This approach aims to equip students with a comprehensive set of skills applicable throughout their lives. Specific lessons tailored to each grade level ensure developmental appropriateness. While some concepts may be revisited annually, the lessons will vary based on the students' age. For more information, please see the QSI Empower statement.

Teachers will keep parents informed about the upcoming lessons for their child, and for certain grades, the lesson plans will be accessible in this newsletter. Click on the post below to view the message from the teacher.
