Director's Message

Dear KIS Community,

I would like to congratulate the graduating class of 2023! The graduation ceremony was truly lovely and filled with emotion. I am so proud of our graduates, our teachers, parents, and the community for everything that has been done to reach this point of celebration and success. I have no doubt this class will do great things and look forward to seeing them take on the world!

Today, KIS is celebrated 30 years of excellence and success in Kyiv and Ukraine! Thank you to our PTO for coordinating and planning the celebration on campus. It looked like a wonderful time, and it is always nice when our community can come together to enjoy some food, fun, and activities. It is bittersweet to celebrate 30 years as a school during a time when the country is at war.

Though we had a small celebration now for the school, we are all waiting to celebrate Ukraine's victory! At this time, we will also celebrate how the school has stayed and stood with Ukraine these many years. We also truly appreciate that you have stayed and stood with KIS these many years!

Sincerely,

Luke Woodruff
Director
Kyiv International School

Coordinator's Message

Dear Families,

Our Preschool Summer performance was simply amazing. Every child performed with exuberance, and their performance was a true spectacle of talent and hard work.

The show was perfectly choreographed, with each and every child getting their moment in the spotlight. They all had their chance to show their talents and the way they executed their acts was simply remarkable.

The Concert was splendid, and it left everyone filled with admiration and delight. It was an excellent display of the creativity, confidence, and talent of our young performers, and it will surely remain etched in the memories of everyone who witnessed it.

If you missed this wonderful event, you still can watch it on the KIS youtube channel.

Success Orientations

Dear KIS Parents and Students,

Our SO topic for the last five weeks was Trustworthiness. Trustworthiness is a vital leadership habit because trust plays an important role in healthy relationships and everyday encounters with others. Those who are trustworthy are more likely to foster positive relationships. Whether it is through small teaching moments or larger conversations around trust, you can teach kids about trustworthiness and the importance of being someone others can rely on.

BEING HONEST

Being honest means telling the truth and not lying. By being honest, others are more likely to believe what you say which allows you to build a strong reputation in your community. In addition, if you are honest, you do not risk betraying or losing someone else’s trust. It is important to teach kids the importance of being honest and how honesty can build trustworthiness and positive relationships with others.

BEING RELIABLE

Reliability is essential when we teach kids about trustworthiness. Being reliable means consistently matching your words to your actions. It is crucial that you are trustworthy but also reliable, because it shows those around you that you can keep your promises and be there for others when they need you most.

PLAYING BY THE RULES

Whether it is during school activities, family game nights, or playing with friends, kids can learn how to be trustworthy by playing by the rules. This means that even though you may want to win a game, you will not cheat or cut corners to do so.

HAVING THE COURAGE TO DO THE RIGHT THING

Teaching our children about courage is crucial. Courage is the drive to do the right thing even when that might not be an easy choice. Sometimes, doing the right thing can be uncomfortable and may require courage; however, doing the right thing in a tough situation builds character and shows others that you are reliable and trustworthy. Trustworthiness, reliability, and courage go hand-in-hand!

BUILDING A GOOD REPUTATION

In order to build a good reputation in your community, it is crucial that we show others that we are trustworthy by being reliable, courageous, and doing the right thing. When others know they can rely on you, you can build healthy relationships—and what better way to positively influence those around you! When teaching trustworthiness to kids, is important that you put it into practice. For example, we provide opportunities for kids to demonstrate their trustworthiness, and enforce positive and negative consequences according to the circumstances and outcomes. Walk the talk, as the saying goes, and lead by positive example for your kids.

Best regards,

Ms. Nataliya Yegorova

CAS Book Review

“Hey, Kiddo” written by Jarrett J. Krosoczka is a graphic novel biographical memoir that follows the life of the author from early childhood into adulthood. When Jarrett Krosoczka was just a small boy, he was separated to his parents and was sent off to live with grandparents that never thought they would raise another child again. As he grows older, the young boy realizes that not everyone has a mother with an addiction problem and a mysterious dad they barely see. Jarrett struggles with the concept of family, and often times it gets in the way of his mental health. Later, when the young boy becomes much older, he starts piecing together the whispered secrets and murmurs said behind his back about his family. The book explores themes of resilience, family, and self-discover though art.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes coming of age stories. I know a lot of people do not like biographical stories, but this is a great read filled with beautifully emotional scenes that would make anyone cry.
